Guidelines for Reviewers

Our goal is to provide rapid, fair, and high-quality reviews for each submitted paper.  If a reviewer feels that he or she may be in conflict with a paper, then the reviewer should discuss the potential conflict with the editor who invited the review prior to reviewing.

Reviews do not need to be lengthy, but should concentrate upon the most important issues.

  1. Novelty and Value:  Does the paper present something new likely to be of interest to the interdisciplinary IBMISPS audience? Is the work of importance?
  2. Review of literature: Does the paper fairly represent itself within the context of the literature?
  3. Clarity:  Is the organization of the paper clear? Is it written in good English? Is it likely to be understood by a multidisciplinary audience?
  4. Methods:  Are the methods clearly presented and sound?
  5. Results: Are the results convincingly presented? Are they of importance?
  6. Discussion and Conclusion section: Do the authors appropriately recognize the limitations of the proposed techniques? Do the authors clearly state what the importance of their work might be and indicate what future work might require?

Guidelines for Authors

We encourage a variety of types of submissions including report of original research, review articles, discussion of controversies, and case reports.  Papers should be written in good English and should be clearly organized. We expect that all submissions, regardless of type, should present novel work not previously reported or under consideration of publication elsewhere and that this work be of importance to a multidisciplinary audience. Authors are welcome to discuss potential submission of a paper with Dr. Kateb in advance of submission at or in his absence contact Dr. Bullitt

For submission to an IBMISPS special issue, submissions are limited to two from each author and institution. Exceptions can be made if additional papers of exceptionally high quality and addressing clearly different issues are submitted from the same author or institution.

The following guidelines must be followed in order to prevent rejection prior to review.

  1. A first title page must provide the title, author’s names and complete affiliations, and the address for correspondence including author name, email address, physical address, and telephone and fax numbers.
  2. A second abstract page must provide a one paragraph summary of the work in less than 250 words.
  3. The usual organization for the body text of scientific papers is Introduction, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. We expect that the majority of papers will follow this organization. However, some papers, such as review articles or case reports, may not fit well into this format. We therefore allow alternate organizational headers, but expect that each paper will be divided into clear organizational headers and that each section be clear and self-contained.
  4. IBMISPS follows the guidelines of NeuroImage in its publication. The cover letter should be addressed to the managing editor, Babak Kateb.  The role of each co-author must be clearly stated in the cover letter. This is done to protect the rights of co-author and encourage teams discuss authorship before submission. Signature of all co-authors needed in order the article to be reviewed by IBMISPS peer review committees.
  5. Manuscripts should be submitted as double spaced, in Arial 11 or larger font, and with one inch margins. Pages should be numbered consecutively in a header or footer.  A maximum of 15 pages, including the title page, abstract, body text is allowed. This however will not include all figures, tables and references; such information should be allowed in multiple pages (up to the authors).  Tables may be single spaced.  Each Table or Figure must be cited in the text, appear consecutively as cited, and include a clear legend. Figure and Table legends may be single spaced, but should be brief and aim only to explain the image or table—additional information that should be included in the main body text should not be given in the legends. Greyscale images will be published without charge. If color images are required, the author is responsible for paying $300 per color page.
Color publication in the hardcopy of the special issue is mandatory.
  6. Acknowledgements should follow the body text and should be double spaced.
  7. References should follow Acknowledgements and should be cited in the body text by name and date. See the NeuroImage guide to authors for more detail as to reference citations http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/622925/authorinstructions

If a paper is accepted pending minor revision, the authors may not resubmit a paper that changes the data nor address anything in the paper other than the comments made by the reviewers. If major changes are made to a resubmitted paper previously accepted pending minor revision, it will be to the discretion of the associate editor as to whether or not the new version can be accepted or must again be sent out for external review.

Papers involving human subjects should include statements as to IRB approval and HIPAA compliance (when submitted from the US), or appropriate adherence to guidelines aimed at patient protection when submitted from other countries.

Accepted papers with color images can be published only if the authors have paid the required fees, which will be requested upon acceptance of the paper and expected within one month. If the fees are not paid the paper may not be published.
